Does Anyone Really Write New Year’s Resolutions Anymore?

So, I’m a little late in posting this. Clearly I don’t have a New Year’s resolution to write more often…but maybe I should!

Eh…better late than never.

I don’t know about you, but the media and marketing that goes on a week before New Year’s always makes me think I have to come up with some New Year’s resolution. And then inevitably you get asked that question at that New Year’s party as a conversation starter. Due to the fact that I’m generally rebellious in my core, I choose not to have a resolution, and thats OK because I don’t want to be put into that box! Don’t put my next year in a box!!

Well, a few years ago, I came across an article by Paul Tripp on making New Year’s resolutions. He uses the same one every year… And basically sums up my new belief. He states,

…the character and quality of your life won’t be defined by two or three life-changing moments. No, the character and quality of your life will be defined by the 10,000 little decisions, desires, words, and actions you make every day.

YES! I mean do people ever really accomplish those three goals that year? And what happens after you’ve accomplished your goals? And what if you accomplish your goals in the first 3 months of the new year? It’s unrealistic. And frankly, 3 goals is not very motivating. As humans, we need to see progress and to celebrate the “wins” we have all the time. It keeps us motivated to keep going.

So instead of 3 goals for the year… my year will be made up of 10,000 little decisions, desires, words, and actions I make this year. When I make a decision in the morning, it usually sets up the trajectory for my day. And when I make a healthy choice for lunch, I will make a healthy choice for a snack, which leads to me choosing to do something active. And when I choose to stop and listen to someone, or speak truth in love over someone, I’m setting up a depth and richness for the rest of that year. My New Year’s resolution is to intentionally make 10,000 little decisions in 2016.
